Lists and tips abound on the Internet, full of advice from vocal coaches, music educators and experienced singers on how to effectively prepare for an audition that will blow your audience out of the water. While things like wearing a warm scarf in cool temperatures to ensure your vocal muscles stay warm, consuming a nice warm beverage to warm up the larynx and practicing a proper warm up routine is all sage advice – we thought we should let you in our secret recipe for the ultimate audition experience.
Here’s our top 3 tips to help you rock your next audition!
And not just in through the nose and out through the mouth (which serves to warm up the air before it hits your larynx) – but really just breathe! There’s a lot of hype out there about giving the perfect audition that can cause young singers to get overly nervous, causing tension in the vocal muscles. Whenever you start to feel that nervous tension seeping in, stop and take a few deep breaths!
In the same vein as remembering to breathe away the tension – relax! There’s no need to stress or fret about how your audition is going to go. If you find pre-audition anxiety to be creeping up on you, perhaps prepare yourself with a few go-to strategies to re-center your mind. Maybe prepare a yoga routine and practice it in the days leading up to the audition. Go for run on the morning of. Or, put on a favourite tune and shake it off!
3) Remember How Much You Love To Sing!
This is perhaps the best advice anyone can give you: remember why you are auditioning in the first place – because you love to sing! Singing makes you feel good and remembering that positive sensation will cause you to shine in your audition. In the days leading up to it, practice singing your favourite songs around the house or with friends just to get in tune with your love of the process!
