Toronto Children's Chorus Mourns the Passing of

Ruth Watson Henderson

June 11th, 2026

The Toronto Children's Chorus is deeply saddened by the passing of Ruth Watson Henderson, one of Canada's most beloved composers, musicians, and educators, and a cherished member of the TCC family.

Ruth served as collaborative pianist of the Toronto Children's Chorus from 1978 to 2007, working alongside founder Jean Ashworth Bartle during some of the most formative years in the organization's history. Through her artistry, generosity, and extraordinary musical gifts, she helped shape the sound of the Chorus and inspired generations of young singers.

A composer of remarkable imagination and sensitivity, Ruth created a body of work that transformed the landscape of Canadian choral music. Her compositions for treble voices, many written with the Toronto Children's Chorus in mind, have become an enduring part of the repertoire sung by choirs around the world. Works such as Missa Brevis, Voices of Earth, The Last Straw, My Heart Soars, and countless others continue to inspire singers and audiences with their beauty, lyricism, and deep understanding of the human voice.

Yet those who knew Ruth will remember more than her extraordinary accomplishments. They will remember her kindness, humility, wit, and unwavering dedication to young musicians. For nearly three decades, she sat at the piano beside our choristers, encouraging excellence while nurturing a lifelong love of music.

Jean Ashworth Bartle often referred to Ruth as "a national treasure." Those words feel especially fitting today. Ruth's influence extends far beyond the concert hall. Her music has touched countless lives, and her legacy lives on in every choir that sings her works and every young person who discovers the joy of choral music through them.

The Toronto Children's Chorus was honoured to recently recognize Ruth's lifetime of contributions to music and community with the King Charles III Coronation Medal. We are especially grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate her in person and to express our appreciation for her remarkable legacy. We are pleased to share photos from that special occasion with this tribute.

On behalf of the Toronto Children's Chorus community – past and present – we extend our heartfelt condolences to Ruth's family, friends, colleagues, and the many musicians whose lives she enriched.

We are profoundly grateful for Ruth's extraordinary contributions to our organization and to Canadian choral music. Her voice, her spirit, and her music will continue to resonate through generations of singers to come.

May her music continue to soar.
